Overall?... A Morgan, I'm ashamed to admit to have ran one! I have a few other "Least favorites" but Morgans are 6 legged junk! |

My worst pump was a Schwing 28m on a Western Star. GMC 6-53 and a 913 road ranger. Engine blew black smoke, rear half of fuller was shot, no clutch brake, no binders and I was the lone ranger driving it from where it was deserted in the back of a RM yard on the Western slope to a pour ½ way up to Leadville on the Breckenridge side. I picked the pump up @ 7pm and my pour [45% slope paving] started at 8am the following day. [sleep in the cab] The remote didn’t work, I had to crawl under it to get it in pump gear, gates were history, turret was ½ full and the air compressor and water pump were shot. I finished the pour and went back to the plant to wash out [on site plant MM] and the plant was locked and the power for the water pump was off. I scraped it out, emptied out the pipes and elbows [by myself in the dark] And left |

Mayco LST 60. Every 500 yards we had to replace the cutting ring and wear plate. It could'nt pump slower than 10 yards a hour, so it was tough pumping grout with 2 inch gear. Transcrete was anther line pump that was messed up. It had a cutting ring that floated per-say and was always plugged up in the hopper. Thompsons where great compared to Mayco and Transcrete, if you knew how to short stroke them and take care of them. But then agian the 12-14 cell putz's and the 900-1200 swings made life much easier.

Hydroseal maxi... Had a brand new 40m in 1990,thought id hit the big time!! Mounted on a foden with a 300 cat fuller etc , slept in the cab(day cab) the night before in minus temperatures at the painters in derby, then left at 3.30 to start a 500m pour in hull . Had an aluminium hyd.tank which exploded after an hour so ended up with the return pipes in the top. Flat out it did about a load in just over 3mins with the cat running just in the red (was told it was designed like that and it was ok!!) When fully extended over the front the rear 2 axles floated about a foot off the ground,(they had used so much ali. there was no weight to hold it down!) The water pump was a cheap roller type that you could p.. faster than. Got off site at 11.30 pm and drove straight home , got in at 4.30 am and left the keys and my notice on the desk. For any other uk operators remember AFD pumping? ( stands for A F....... Disaster) Come to think of it theres never been a good english pump!!!

I am sure this thread will be deleted soon! I think it will make it. This is about one pump not about all of one kind of pump. Even the NASCAR guys build a lemon. |

Bob, Here's your bad memory... Or was it a Z with a counter weight? The most dependable pump in the world is an old 28 gate. My problem was with that one pump in particular. |

The guy that took over the pump when I drug-up is no longer in the pumping bizz so I guess it is fair to tell the story. He put up with it for three days and every day the supervisor said that they were going to fix it/get it fixed. The next day..... same deal, make the pour operating on the stacks, crawl under to do the pto, empty the pipe in the dark - this was the worst pump in the world, NOTHING worked but pump on + pump off. The last day he put the boom straight up in the air, turned the pump on and never went back. That is how they found it the next morning.......... out of fuel Classic ;~) |

Operated a 1983 Whiteman three section boom, my first over head roll and fold in New York City, GMC truck with 13 speed road ranger. Try driving out of the city to Long Island at four o'clock I swear my right arm is trice as strong as my left but i'm left handed. Anyone bitches about traffic in thier city go eastbound on I495 any afternoon. One hours drive into city from fifty miles out, fastest return trip three hours and ten minutes |

Mine was the first 45m schwing ever brought to the states. It was a stiff legg 45 meter on a crane carrier truck from germany. the outriggers were too small and everytime it went out it broke down. and when the truck broke u had to get parts from germany. |

One other thing! If u look close they have put a cab behind the hopper were a driver sits, everytime they need to turn the pump on the driver would put it in gear and give it gas. |
