RISKY BUSINESS

The economic slowdown has not done any of us much good. Hours are harder to get, payments are harder to make and our co-workers are not as safe today as they were two years ago.

If you are wondering what I am talking about, I will tell you.

The professional boom inspection and repair business is slower than it has been since its inception. We may differ on what is really necessary when it comes to frequency; but I have never seen a company do as good a job inspecting their own booms as the professionals do. This is one of those areas where just good enough – usually isn’t.

The Concrete Pump Manufacturers Association, the people that know more about our pumps than anyone, has set standards for boom inspections. I fear that these standards are not being met.

The ‘second owner’ pumps are the ones most at risk. There are many 1990s pumps out there that are way overdue for a professional inspection. Even the early 2000 machines are in that category. This is going to jump up and bite you in the --- some day; and what do you then tell the person that was injured?

If you as a pump owner cannot afford to have a professional boom inspector inspect your pump, you and your customers, are at risk.
